Shri Nawal Kishore Anand | Founding Partner

Nawal Kishore Anand (27 October 1928 – 29 March 2023), affectionately known as NK Anand, was the visionary founder of Anand and Anand, India’s premier intellectual property (IP) law firm. His pioneering work laid the foundation for modern IP jurisprudence in the country. Called to the Bar in 1956, Mr. Anand dedicated over six decades to the practice of IP law. In 1979, he established Anand and Anand, which has since evolved into a leading full-service IP law firm, offering comprehensive solutions in protection, enforcement, advisory, licensing, and litigation across patents, trademarks, copyrights, and more.

Throughout his illustrious career, Mr. Anand was a staunch advocate for robust IP protection, significantly influencing India’s legal landscape. His unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation earned him numerous accolades, including the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), recognizing his unparalleled contributions to IP law. Under his leadership, Anand and Anand expanded its presence with offices in New Delhi, Noida, Chennai, and Mumbai, employing over 300 professionals. The firm is renowned for its litigation expertise, boasting a patent grant rate exceeding 93% and successfully handling over 1,800 trademark oppositions recently.

Mr. Anand’s legacy is deeply embedded in the firm’s culture, emphasizing a balance between commercial realities and legal pragmatism. His vision continues to inspire the firm’s commitment to providing thoughtful and reliable IP solutions to its clients. NK Anand’s enduring contributions have left an indelible mark on India’s IP jurisprudence, guiding Anand and Anand to its esteemed position in the legal community. In his long and distinguished career spanning over 60 year, Mr. Anand specialized in Corporate Law, Copyright Law, Patent and Trademark Litigation and General Intellectual Property Practice for the protection and enforcement of IP rights. Mr Anand was an alumnus of the Hindu College and received the Lifetime Achievement Award (2011-2012) for Excellence in Law. He was a member of the Bar Council of India, Supreme Court Bar Association, International Bar Association (AIPPI) and the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Rights (Indian group). He was the Founder-President of Asian patent Attorneys Association (APAA) and Vice President of Delhi High Court Bar Association (1974-76).
