Pravin Anand and MS Bharath look at the seven important intellectual property tribunals in India and their function.

Seven important tribunals dealing with intellectual property rights in India are the Trademark, Patent, Copyright, Design and Geographical Indication offices, the Copyright Board and the Intellectual Property Appellate Board.

The forums are empowered to resolve difficulties and, of course, adjudicate on prosecution and opposition proceedings determining grant of protection. Whereas the IPAB serves as the appellate authority for several of these tribunals, the Copyright Board receives appeals (and has original jurisdiction too) from the Copyright Office and appeals from the Design office lie before the High Court.
