Times of India reports Safir Anand has been invited by the President of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) to its Board of Directors. Sunil Sethi, President, FDCI, remarked “having a specialist on board will help the members with legal action required in such cases.”

Safir Anand has on previous occasions highlighted the need for designers to be more conscious of their intellectual property rights. His role as an FDCI board member is envisaged as one of finding solutions to solve the “copyright issues” prevalent in the fashion industry. His legal expertise and knowledge of the industry will further facilitate action against plagiarism.

The sensitivities of ‘drawing inspiration’ from existing fashion are complex, but designers can be proactive in protecting their creations. The Fashion Dossier discussed in simple and practical terms how trademark, copyright and design laws protect originality. In a talk on “Plagiarism in Fashion“, Safir Anand had joined Nonita Kalra and J. J. Valaya to discuss the measure designers can take to protect their IP.
